This project is based in Zanzibar. Boat anchors can cause great physical damage to corals, particularly at reef sites that see significant boat traffic. Mooring buoys offer a simple solution to the problem created by anchor damage: rather than anchoring boats, they are tied to buoys. Once in place the buoys can be a sustainable and enduring contribution to the conservation of the reefs and seabed.
This project involves installation of mooring buoys to prevent anchor damage on coral reefs around dive and snorkeling sites. This project also provides reef relief by installing marker buoys for badly marked Marine Protected Areas to ensure respect of installed MPA's. Education of boatmen and training of local stafff of governmental Marine Park Authorities is also integral to the Reef Relief project.
